How to Build a Plywood Screen Printing Press

Screen printing isn't just for t-shirts – you can print on just about anything, including wood! Before you begin, make sure your workspace is clean and free of dust. It's also helpful to use a small fan to keep the air moving as you work. Then, wipe down the surface of your wood piece with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or dust. Sand the wood smooth, if needed, to help the ink adhere and prevent any rough spots.

You can use a hand squeegee to apply the ink, or you can rent a professional-quality squeegee from most screenprinting supply stores. If you're using a hand squeegee, hold it at about a 45-degree angle and apply firm and even pressure as you move it over the screen. Avoid sliding the squeegee over the design — doing so can smudge the ink and leave a spot you'll need to touch up later.

Once the ink is dry, pull up your screen and admire your hard work! If you need to, you can cure the print however you'd like – either run it through a conveyor dryer at 270 degrees a few times or use a heat gun. You can even air-dry it if you'd prefer. Be sure to protect your wood from water damage by sealing it with a waterproof sealer or varnish.

As you print, it's important to check the alignment of your stencil and screen. If your prints aren't straight or the lines are smudged, you might need to realign the screen. You can also try loosening the squeegee pressure or trying a second pass with less ink.

Lastly, be sure to use the right type of ink for your project. Water-based inks are best for wood because they penetrate the surface of the wood, while plastisol inks sit on top of the wood and can easily scratch or rub off. If you're planning on using your prints outdoors, consider using a UV-cured or solvent-based ink to ensure they last for years to come.

You can always improve your press, so don't be afraid to experiment! For example, if you find that the arm (part H) is too far away from the platen, loosen the screws and add pieces of cardstock as shims between parts H and U. This will adjust the width of the gap and make your press more accurate. If you do this, just remember to keep adding shims as necessary until youre happy with the results.
