How to Create a Decal Silk Screen Printer

Decals are an integral part of the modern world, serving a multitude of purposes from labeling products to decorating walls or windows. While there are many different ways to print decals, one of the most effective methods is silk screening. This process uses durable epoxy based inks to create high quality, sharp-edged, single color images that look far better than a typical laser printed sticker.

Silk screen printing is a time-tested technique that dates back hundreds of years. It involves stretching a mesh screen coated with light-sensitive emulsion over a frame and exposing it to UV light. Once the emulsion hardens, it acts as a stencil that allows ink to be forced through it with a rubber blade called a squeegee. The result is a printed image that can be transferred onto almost any surface, including vinyl.

To make a custom screen for printing your own decals, start by buying a frame that's 20x24 inches in size (similar to those used to make t-shirts). Then buy a box of mesh screens from any silkscreen printing company that sells supplies. The mesh you need depends on the type of artwork you're using. For example, fine line artwork requires a higher mesh screen than an outline of a Les Paul logo. Once you've bought a set of screens, prepare the artwork to fit about 14x18 inches. Then take it to a silkscreen printing company to expose and prepare the screen.

Creating a decal silk screen printer is easier than it might seem at first glance. You'll need to get the right tension when stretching the screen, coat it with a light-sensitive emulsion and expose it to UV light. Once the emulsion is washed off, you'll have a screen with a negative of your design.

The next step is to print the design on the screen using a special paint. If you're working with a solvent ink, you'll need to use a retarder or a spray that will slow down the drying time. Alternatively, you can use water-based inks. In either case, the screen needs to be thoroughly washed after each printing session.

Once the inks have dried, apply a clear varnish over the printed area to help protect it from wear and tear. The decals will last longer if you treat them with care, like washing them in cold water and avoiding dry cleaning or bleach.

Decals are also available in a variety of colors, making them more versatile than traditional stickers. You can even choose a decal that is reflective or glows in the dark to increase its visibility and safety. Regardless of the material you choose, both decals and silkscreen prints will last for years if properly cared for. Just remember to avoid putting them in the oven or in direct sunlight, and don't expose them to chemicals such as gasoline or industrial solvents. Using a decal silk screen printer to print your own stickers is a great way to customize your equipment and give it a professional look.
